Subject:   OMG Thomas Jefferson was a LIBERAL!
Date:   10/2/2013 7:09:41 PM

Okay… so I read a comment that “Thomas Jefferson was a liberal.” That is correct.  He had a classical liberal education (from the College of William & Mary) that placed him on solid ground in history, philosophy, and science (etc. for him). In particular, his education taught him to think for himself… to be truly critical.  He did NOT just write the Declaration of Independence (http://mrandolphmason.ipage.com/lnk/DECLARATION-OF-INDEPENDENCE.doc ) off the top of his head.

I could write a declaration of independence!  And guess what… within the first paragraph, I’d be quoting or paraphrasing Jefferson.  Why is that?  Because in high school, I was REQUIRED to take civics, U.S. History, and World History… because in college, I was REQUIRED to take World History. Those subjects are lacking, corrupted, or disregarded in education today.

How many young folks today could give a reason… much less a basis… for the Declaration of Independence?  Ask one (or a few).  Prepare for some disappointment.  From this premise comes the term “low information voter.”

How will we draw the line from history and philosophy to our current predicament?  The sad news is that we won’t. I am afraid that the re-election of Obama was the “tipping point” for our nation. The remainder of our history is likely to be very unpleasant.

My wife says, “I hope you are wrong. I don’t like that it’s true.”
