Now that the question about non-resident licensing has been answered. What is needed to register your boat in Alabama? We live out of state and have a weekend place and the boats will now stay at Lake Martin. I am jealous of the boats...

Do you keep your boat at a Marina or at your place? If it's at the marina they will do it for you. If not, then I don't know.

Some of the marinas will get your registration for you if you have an account with them. Ask and see if not go by the courthouse yourself.

I purchased a 1996 Scarab from a person in Al. in 1997, the sale was consumated in Ga., no sales tax since it was a common sale. In Al. ,would have been sales tax. Regestered the boat in Ga.. Purchased a place on Lake Martin, was told if the boat was in Al. more than 180 days a year it could not be registered in Ga. Changed the registration to Al. Ga. has personal property tax. . Al .does not . Got a tax bill from Ga. for the personal property tax, told them the boat was registered in Al. No tax in Al. or Ga. Food for thought.

yep, one of the reasons we want to register in Alabama. Just trying to figure out what paperwork is needed.

All you need is a bill of sale and the current tag number of the boat. Or in your case just the tag reciept to change the registration. I don't think a title applies, but if you have one it would be best to bring it. You will also need the mailing address of your property in Alabama. The value of the boat has no bearing in Alabama. The tag is based on the length of the vessel. If it is difficult to get here during courthouse hours, you could probably do this with a surragate. I do my sisters every year, but it is a renewall, not a new registration.

Also keep in mind that in Alabama you buy your tags based on a system of the first letter of you last name. Each letter is assigned a month in which to renew your tags. The good news is at this time, there is no penalty for purchasing boat tags late. So if your month is in the winter, you can wait until spring to take care of it with no penalty. I think they should impose a late fee on boats, just like cars, but they dont.

Hope this helps!!
