I've really enjoyed this forum and have learned a lot about the lake from reading all postings and replies. Everyone sure seems to love this lake!!
My husband and I are looking for property at Lake Martin for our retirement. We have lived in Alabama years ago and really liked the area. We think it would be a great place to live in the coming years.
I'd appreciate anyone's input/opinions as to the best areas on the lake that we should look at lots or homes. We'd like to "have it all"--nice view of the water, gentle sloping lot to a dock.... I'm sure we'll have great neighbors-everyone there seems so nice. Thanks for your input.

Hi Over,
I am not an expert on the lake, nor even a resident (yet). Last year, my wife and searched the lake, and we eventually purchased a lot in Phase II at The Ridge, where we hope to retire to at the end of this year.

The Ridge is in a planned 200 lot development. I believe that it will be one of the nicest places on the lake. It is the central part of the lake and about 15-20 minutes south of Alexander City.

We purchased through Micky Phillips at Russell Land Development Co., and we were very pleased with her service.

Good luck in your search, and I am sure you will discover many beautiful developments on the lake.

Up front about it - I am biased.

It sounds like you are looking at a full time residence as a retirement home. If true, then you have all avenues open. Some weekenders like to select a section of the Lake that is closest to their principal residence.

I like the section of the Lake that the maps at the bottom of this Forum describes as the Big Kowaliga area. That is Parker Creek, Oakachoy and Little Kowaliga Creek. I also like the section that is located in Coosa County. The advantage and/or disadvantage is that this area is a little more remote. There appears to be less traffic on the roads and on that section of the Lake.

You will find more restaurants and activity probably in the Dadeville area. Then you also need to consider whether you like a developent type community with an association or otherwise.

There are a lot of pros and cons based on your lifestyle and personal likes. I am with you on the gentle slope to the water with advancing age and associtated physical mobility.

Enjoy the search and good fortune with your outcome.

Better get your billfold ready, what you are looking for is in the 4 to 5 hundred thousand dollar range. A lot with any size, with a gentle slope to the lake will run 100,000 to 140,000 dollars, house 2 thousand sq. ft. @ 80 dollars =160,000. sea wall, boat dock, landscaping, God only knows ,and those figures are conserative.

Probably more like $100-125/ ft. without lot, seawall, etc.

Like I stated. that figure was low, you must be a Auburn graduate.

Just curious, JIM, from what university did you graduate?

And I did say "graduate;" that is not the same as being a fan of a school. You are so quick to ridicule the educations of others; let's hear all about yours, if you're man enough to tell us. (And tell us the truth.)

At Auburn, students learn to use "an" instead of "a" before a word that starts with a vowel. For example, "an Auburn graduate".

We searched the lake hi and low for the same thing and found Trillium to be the answer.

You should probably decide whether you want to be on a point or in a slough. Generally, a point gives you a better view, but you will not have a gentle slope down to the dock. Being in a slough you'll have flatter land, but may be on top of your neighbors.
