This is why AL is going to grow. I knew the tax burden in AL was low but not the 5th lowest in the country. Think that bodes well for a retirement boom....?

URL: Al 5th lowest in total per capita taxes

You got it RR (Co-Choir Director). I have been preaching this type of example for a couple of years on the Forum. On top of all this, there is no State Income tax (for some of us) so it just gets better and better.

Not only are we the bible belt - we are the best planned retirement benefit.

We will not have a long wait until the prosperity of Alabama becomes the Car Industry of the USA to make it better for all of us and our Children.

Lake Martin property is going to sky rocket well beyond the present. Lets just keep the quality of life the same.

Choir - Song. We are singing our good fortune. No sauce required to provide some of us our natural high. Don't avoid the issue and please provide good advise as opposed to unfounded accusations.

Where does Al. rate in education in public schools, due to lack of taxes? But that is not your problem, right.

Taxes do not equal good education and Georgia is not getting any awards on a state-wide basis either; as I've said before, education is mostly a factor of parental involvement. If a family wants its children to be educated, it can be accomplished in any system.....regardless of how much money is thrown around and wasted in the name of a better society.

Fulton Co. is a great example; with inflated taxes, it has some of the best and worst schools in Georgia.

Interesting point Jim. You are correct in one aspect since I do not have children. I will say I have payed, and I am still paying my share of taxes for the education of other's children while they were receiving tax deductions for the same children. Is there an inequity for me to pay for the education of other folk's kids instead of them paying for it??? Maybe, I have just painted a slanted view. I don't know, but it does not worry me. I am sure some of your and my tax dollars have gone to worse causes.

Jim, I have worked hard all my life and made a lot of personal sacrifices. I do not feel guilty for my hard earned small success. It is probably insignificant compared to others. You recently posted your personal pleasure and pride as a parent of a wonderful person. I do not have the opportunity to share that aspect of self satisfaction. To each his or her own, and I did felt good for you and expressed it .

So, please do not attempt to dampen my pride in the few areas of success I have accomplished. I would like to have the same opportunity to gloat or feel self satisfaction. You copy?

I think it was Jim that asked about schools.

I've done some checking in the Alex City, Dadeville, and Auburn area.

Coming in at # 3 - Dadeville High. (can't tell you much, as I dismissed it after researching #2, and #1)
#2 - Russell High School - Alex City - good scores, good student teacher ratios, and about 900+ students..
#1 - Auburn High School - is the 120th top school in U.S. News and World Report in 2004? 2005? Out of 22,000 US public schools. Also rated in the top 100 schools in some Family magazine - like Parenting Magazine. Also mentioned by the New York Times? as the best public bang for the buck... Scores are great, many IB courses, choices in curriculum like engineering (can you believe in high school?), student/teacher ratio good, more than 50% teachers have advanced degrees, only about 900+ in high school (10th - 12th grade).....sorry I don't know the actual names of the publications...but if you research Auburn HIgh School, you can see for yourself. Fantastic school.

That's another reason (besides being priced out of Lake Martin) we have decided to retire to Auburn....including all the aforementioned tax credts, etc. The lake location, the tax situation, the schools (my youngest will be in 9th grade by then): our plans are to be there in 2 1/2 years!

We are already looking to purchase a lot...before THOSE prices get beyond us.....
