From the outside looking in, I have an opinion that I think everyone should hear. I do not live on a lake in Alabama or own a boat that will be banned by this law. I just like to read the FORUM. Ya’ll can be pretty funny at times. So here goes. This all started as a development on Lake Harris, that the APCO only owns around 3,500 acres. APCO’s, Willard Bowers, vice president of environmental affairs, stated in a previous interview with The Daily Home, that stakeholders on Lake Harris wanted to ban HOUSEBOATS!!!!!!! He also stated that stakeholders on Lake Martin wanted to be part of this legislation. Then, APCO said the only way they would support this bill would be if it included all APCO lakes without locks. This leads to SB487 and HB756, which prohibit the use of residence boats, recreational vessels longer than 30 feet and six inches, or recreational vessels with engines in excess of 500 horsepower. Which would include some or almost all of the cabin cruisers that run on Lake Martin (most of which are docked at Russell Marine Marinas) Do you think that will effect Russell’s income?? I’m thinking, PROBABLY SO!!!!! All of a sudden things take a turn (in favor of Russell). A substitute bill is introduced. I read today that only three lakes are now involved: Harris, Martin and Weiss. Why would that be??? The new bill will grandfather in all boats longer that 30 feet, 6 inches but will ban boats longer than 26 feet, 11 inches that are capable of exceeding 60 MPH. Does this make any sense??? I heard this was a bill to help overcrowding. Do the unsafe, (because of the size) vessels come into play like Jet Skis and paddleboats? NOT!! So, who is in the others wallet??? APCO or Russell. With that said (WHEW!!!), I am at home alone with two children while my husband is in IRAQ fighting for our FREEDOM. Does the State of Alabama know the real meaning of FREEDOM?? Anyone who supports this bill is as selfish and un-American as it comes.

Since you are an outsider, please consider these facts. Those who want the bill defeated are very few (maybe 20-50 on this forum) while those in support of the bill number in the thousands. A guess-- the most vocal of the detractors of the bill do not own property on the lake; therefore, they have no vested interest in what happens on the lake or who gets killed-just their selfish pleasure.

If the politicians make this a safer, quieter lake then they are doing their job. If a safer, quieter lake attracts more desirable developments then the lake will develop in the right way.

I have asked this question before, why is the bill necessary? Could it possibly be that many boaters must be restricted because of the irresponsible actions of a few (some are probably on this forum)

Your typical response is a personal attack to deflect attention from the real issue. Why is it necessary to restrict some undesirable activities on the lake???

Why do most anti-law boaters resort to personal attacks rather than discuss the issue?

You are so wrong .I have owned two properties on Lake Martin since 1990, my parents house and mine. How many accidents on the Lake are the fault of the banned boats? How many of the accidents were the fault of jet skis, deck boats, pontoons or runabouts? No comparison. You are the selfish one just because the banned boats are something you don’t like. I was on the lake fishing today and there is no lack of development on this lake which will mean more boats, and over crowding. A lot of the tree tops I fished last year for crappie are no longer there because of what you call desirable developments. I sure hope you and the majority like fishing, if not I guess fishing will be the next ban we will face in the interest of desirable developments. This bill serves absolutely no useful purpose what so ever, over crowding no, wakes, no the wind today made the lake look like the ocean, Safer, get real the desirable developments are going to bring with it a lot more ORFs ( Old retired Farts) who did not even have to take a boaters test because they were grand fathered in. Once again you and the so called majority are the selfish one’s, you have accomplished nothing but allowing the State to take away yet another privilege. This is not a personal attack but fact. You and the majority are wrong.

Sorry, but I'm not an ORF. If we're lucky we may get to be an ORF one day. The majority is just that; they are the majority; you may not always agree with them, BUT in this country the majority rules.

I thought Georgia developers wanted to ban house boats. Since when did houseboats length start at 27 ft.and top speeds start at 60 mph? This is a ban on go fast boats not big boats. Go fast boats ride on top of the water ,big boats plow threw it.

Power company mans wife must have got bagged by man in Eliminator, was'nt me I have a Correct Craft.

No one called you an ORF. Read the post again and maybe you can make an resonable debate.Point is, this ban accomplishes nothing but making the majority happy at the expence of the few which is all that politisions are interested in to get reelected and line there pockects. THIS BILL SERVES NO USEFUL PURPOSE.

Finally someone with some sense about them. For some reason the property owners at LM just don't get the picture do they....all they see is what they think they are hearing. They think this bill will somehow make boats disappear and the lake is suddenly safe.

Don't know about selfish and un-American. Would you call all those who were in favor of the ban on smoking in restaurants selfish and un-American? Or how about those who have banned snowboarding on some of their mountains in favor of skiers only (eg Alta)? Or how about those in favor of the restriction of hand guns which have resulted in the limitation or exclusion of gun ownership in towns, cities and states by law abiding citizens? I bring this up because the world must abide by rules that not everybody likes, but the debate should be civil and our politicians should do a far better job of fostering this discourse by fully disclosing motives involved.
