Just learned sadly that Erk Russell passed this morning; he was in a car accident this morning in Statesboro, GA but they think the cause of death was a stroke.

For those who don't know, he was a legendary coach at UGA and Ga Southern and also a member of the Auburn walk of fame. A true giant who was a man of honor and integrity.

He will be missed. All Georgia fans should wear black this Sat evening when we play the evil genius and South Carolina.

A great man in every sense of the word. Talk to him by phone in the mid 80`s about my son playing football at Ga. Southern, and he was a real GENTLEMAN.

Very sorry to hear of his passing. I really don't think Georgia's defense has been quite as good since he left as defensive coordinator.

Will never forget him butting heads before the game without a helment with helment -clad players. Drew blood. UGA had some great defenses under Irk.

Living in Atlanta and being an Auburn fan, I have always had difficulties with Georgia fans however, Erk was one of my alltime favorites. I also remember his head-butting and the way it pumped his players and fans as well. Even though I certainly am not a Georgia fan, I was crushed when Vince Dooley stepped down as coach and Erk was not offered the job. He put Georgia Southern on the map and I often wonder what he could have done for Georgia as head coach. Rest in peace Erk and my prayers are with your family. It pains me to do this but, here goes, Go Dawgs!

I've always been a Dawg fan, but it has always amazed me just how closely UGA and Auburn are intertwined. Dooley, Joel Eaves, Erk Russell are Auburn heroes as well as Dawg icons and then Pat Dye was a great GA player that made good at Auburn.

Just read an updated tribute to Erk on ajc.com and he was quite a guy.

I went to Georgia Southern undergrad school. Georgia grad school. And am now a great Auburn wife. Last weekend at the game, I saw Erk's stepping stone...and that was a new one for me...someone tell me his Auburn story before I go and google it. I had NO IDEA he was Auburn made.

You've probably googled by now, but Erk was the last 4 sport letterman at Auburn, I think I read he won 10 varsity letters while at Auburn and a member of the Alabama sports hall of fame.

of why the GA Auburn rivalry is more like brothers than enemies. Too much like family..
