I put up a martin house last weekend, but haven't seen any martins at all on Dead Timbers Bay where we live. Are the birds in the area yet?

I'm not sure if the martins are in your specific area but they have been on the lake for some time now. In the past, we have had the martins come to our house exactly on Valentines day. You could set your calender by it. The past two years, they have come in nearly a month late for some reason. As I understand it, a lot of martins return to where they were born so you may get the same family year after year. I have also talked to some people that it took 10 years before a family of martins took up residence in the bird house they put up. There are electronic calls that can be put out near your house to help bring the birds in. You may want to check out "The Purple Martin Conservation Association" on the web. They have a cool map that shows you the martins migration on a daily basis.

All in all, don't give up hope. Martins are great to have around. You would not believe the amount of "skeeters" etc. they can consume in a day.

10 years! Dang, my birdhouse won't last THAT long.
After I posted the original message, there was a couple dozen of martins circling around our local shoreline. They apparently found a lot of insects around a willow tree. Not a single one landed on my birdhouse even though they circled all around it and the pier for over a half hour.

I think you were too late. Before I moved, they would build a nest annually in the aluminum structure under my pontoon boat. I think they usually started in late Feb or early March. We took them for weekend rides to Chimney Rock and it didn't seem to faze them. When we returned the parents would return to chirping and feeding.
