Since the water is down and no rise in site....a floating pier might be needed where I am. I have the configuration as a simple 10 x 12. How do you determine how big and how many drums you need underneath for adequate floation? Suggestions?

If I an not mistaken APCO will not approve drums under a floating dock anymore. believe you have to use the enclosed black capsule type, if I am not mistaken.. Not sure if they will still allow the blue nylon cover floats anymore or not, but do not think they do.

Purchased my floats at www.carolinadocks.com and they will probably outlast the dock itself. They are $69.99 plus $38.61 for shipping. I was able to negotiate a better deal by calling them. Think I paid around $90.00 delivered about 3 years ago.

I used the 24"x48"x12" Dock Float and placed 14 underneath my 12 x 14 dock but this is overkill, as each float is rated at 400lbs and I estimated by dock to weight 1,700 lbs excluding any people. And even with 12 people (which would never happen) on dock at an average of 150 lbs each that is only another 1,800 lbs so total would be 3,500 lbs including dock. And I have enough dock floats to carry 5,600 lbs. So on a 12 x 12 dock I would say 8 floats would be ample that would rate out at 3,200 lbs.

Spencer Lumber in Dadeville carries both the blue Styrofoam type and the black plastic "drums". Cheaper than paying freight. Most people, including me, use too much float for a swim platform.

I bought my floats at the Russell Do-it in Eclectic about 3 years ago.....at that time, they were cheaper than I could order them online (after shipping).

You'll need to know the approximate weight of the dock and the displacement of the drums. One cu. ft. of air in the drum will displace about 7 1/2 lbs of water and float that much weight. So if your dock weighs 750 lbs you will need 100 cu ft of drum volume.

I think I have that right.... any AU physics majors out there?

Ric, what you really have to consider is how much of the float do you want underwater. Some of the float is wasted above the water line--it's available to support people, etc. The bottom of my floats are only about 4" below the water's surface even though the float is at least 12" high.

Question: Does anyone have experience using "Flopper Stoppers" on a swim platform to reduce the effects of boat wakes?

The black enclosed drums are what I was talking about. I saw some in Overton's, which I know they are high priced but they have about 10 different sizes. I didn't know what size to get. How do you determine how much the deck part of the pier weighs? I guess I will build it and put some under it and see what happens...if it doesn't stay up good enough I'll add some more. Sucks I have to even go to this measure but as it stands when I normally have about 9 feet of water at the end of pier...I now am around 5.

The black floats I got from Russell's are 4'X4' and were much less than Overtons at the time. I have 6 of them under a 12'X20' floating pier and that is plenty.

come back on Flopper Stopper, but that is a trade name for a device sailboats use to reduce the roll while at anchor. I've heard of them being used on floating docks.

How much were the 4' x 4' ones at Russell?

Sorry, I can't remember.

I just remember that I could get them for a better price here than the 4 or 5 places I found online after considering tax, delivery. etc. Russell brought them out to my house for no extra charge.....they are quite bulky.
