“Take Back Our Highways,” will place all available troopers on patrol duty Aug. 13-17. Every available state trooper will be in uniform and on patrol during the program, including the addition of approximately 200 troopers normally assigned to duties other than patrol. Troopers will target primary violations that cause crashes and contribute to more severe crashes, such as speeding, failure to yield the right of way, following too closely, driver inattention, and driving under the influence.

Now, all that sounds fine and dandy and I don’t have a problem with it at all. But let me ask a question. Is driving in the left lane, continuously, on highway 280 a violation? Like driving from Alex City to Dadeville in the left-hand lane the entire distance. Of course it is. And the biggest violators are the State Police. They are in the left lane, traveling 5-miles-per-hour slower than the speed limit, without their emergency lights on, and not using an audible signal. And in addition to creatung a traffic hazard, what are they doing in the left-hand lane? Trolling for speeders. Well, Section 32-5A-80, "Driving on right side of roadway," of the Alabama Motor Vehicle Code says it’s a violation.

The bottom line . . . if the State Police are going to ticket us for exceeding the speed limit by 1 mile per hour Aug 13-17, then when we show up in traffic court we will report to the judge that the State Trooper was in violation of Section 32-5A-80.

To borrow a slogan from FOX News, let’s keep it “fair and balanced.”

Does this mean "Keep Right Except to Pass"

Upon all roadways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic, or as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway, except when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding in the same direction or when preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.

Yah you can fight in court. If you had a person that was following the Trooper show up to court. If not its going to be his word against yours unless you have some kind of political pull.

Just in case you are stopped at one of their checkpoints, make sure you have your registration and Proof of Insurance handy.

I can beat that. Here in Columbus GA we are having a rash of murders. We have had 20 this year and it is only August. We have had three at least this past week. So the Columbus police announced in today's paper (Sunday Ledger-Enquirer) they added 19 police to patrol high crime areas. However, in Saturday's paper, the police announced they added 48 patrols to work traffic. Go figure that one out!

My hubby got one of these this week. They had 20 people pulled over on 65 N at the same time several times in the day. Who had the bring idea to go from 65 to 50 to 65 mph. This is called a cluster_ __--_* and only creates accidents! All I see are $$$$ for salaries! That should be the campaign slogan! Stick to the speed limit or pay the price this week. I'm always in a hurry to get back to lake Martin. They gave 11,000 tickets in Birmingham alone. Waiting on the total.
