Things to consider for saving water....see link below.

In addition, water saving appliances are becoming more common and should be considered when making a new purchase. We just purchased a new high efficiency washer that uses up to 75% less water and it works great!

Another great suggestion from mckaygmc is to place a 1/2 gal milk jug in your toilet tank. Very large tanks will easily hold more than one. be sure to fill it with water or something heavier than water and cap it off first. I have also seen people put a few solid bricks in the tank.

Every government in the metro ATL area should be impeached for waiting so long to put TOTAL outdoor watering bans in place. NOW that is mismanagement and incompetence

A little trick I installed on both houses was to purchase an expensive ½” pvc ball valve and install it right in front of the shower head. The shower at the lake place is a single handle that you turn right or left so far depending on the amount of hot to cold water ratio you want. There is no way to adjust the amount of water that comes out. When it is on, it is full bore. Now, I can simply reach up and cut the volume back while I am washing my hair or soaping up and open it up more when I need to. I also use the same method here in Hoover even though I can control the amount of flow with the lower permanent valve. But, when I use the permanent valve to change the volume of water, the ratio of hot to cold gets off. With the ball valve at the shower head, I can cut if down or up and the hot to cold ratio stays the same.

I like that idea too.....I assume you meant "inexpensive"

Right, sorry. Seems like it cost between 2 and 3 bucks. I also bought a 1/2" close pvc nipple and covered it with white teflon tape to install between the valve and the shower head.

I know the Asko brand washing machine uses the reduced water amount water amount mentioned by jlazc, use high efficiency detergent (Tide HE as and example) and contains its own internal hot water heater. There are most likely other brands with similar features.

The initial cost for the appliance is high, but it does reduce electrical or gas (depending on type hot water heater in your home), water and detergent consumptiion to the point it pays for itself with the savings in a couple of years.

Asko also has clothes dryers and dish washers.

They are joked about as the Volvo of appliances since they are produced in Sweden and have a reputation for longevity like Maytag used to.

These type appliances (Asko and others) help with futher reduced sewage or septic use.

We bought a Bosch, but there are many brands now producing these machines. For those interested, the January 07 consumer reports has comparisons for washers and HE (High Efficiency) soaps ( unfortunately they did not test the Asko).

We too have a Bosch washer and it really does a nice job. The clothes are nearly dry when they come out of the machine. We had a terrible problem that I hate to admit but it ended up being pretty funny.

Suddenly after almost two years of flawless service, we started getting massive amounts of suds. I mean we had to pull the sheets and towels out and move the suds out in buckets. We called Bosch - they told us to add 1 cup of fabric softener to one gallon of water and put it in the dispenser. Problem became even worse. Called a repairman who called a special number at Bosch. Use vinegar to cut the suds. No help. Ok problem has to be mildew buildup in the water drain. He saw some and told us to run a couple of empty cycles with two cups of bleach to kill the mildew and left.

We did that and no help. Still massive suds.

I told my wife I am going to try this one more time (of course we had always been using miniscule amounts of HE detergent). As I poured the fabric softener (named Fresh something, a Publix brand in a baby blue bottle) my eye caught the word detergent in very small script.

You guessed it - we had been putting massive amounts of detergent we thought was fabric softener in the machine. It never dawned on us that the problem arose during the rinse cycle - duh.

Everything is good now so i still recommend the Bosch!!

I`am going to wash my cars tomorrow. If I give out of money they turn it off, as long as I can turn the faucet on and water comes out there is no water problem.

JIM, You need to buy a pick-up truck. You do not wash "em". Dirt is just an extra layer of protection against ultraviolent (real angry) sun rays.
