Come help clean up the lake March 31- April5 .................................................................................................................

Thats about all I have to report except that I got to meet RatherBeSkiing and LoganMartinNights...............................Nice to finally put a face with a nickname Melissa and good to see you again David..........KKel, did you and your husband make it to the meeting?

I am sorry but I was hoping to have more of an update on the status of the lake and in general what we have to look forward to this year..........I also would appreciate someone from APCO showing up so we can blister him with questions and concerns about the lake.

Also a side note, Jimmys is now JC's sportsbar and they have pretty good food and most all payperview sporting events. FYI Smoky on a busy night if that bothers anyone.

LMN, RBS curious as to what you thought about the meeting......

To Continue from RBS Comments below................................

Do you see how exciting the meeting was last night.......I must have missed the clothes coming off but will attend the next meeting in hopes of catching that part.........it was hot in there though.......

Anyway I noticed the our side your side slant toward things........A girl got up and spoke about a water(river) festival that they were putting on for children to teach them about misc interests in a lake. she ended by saying this is for St CLair County I think Talladega County had one before its to bad they dont now. If anyone want to start it back up contact me and we will see what we can do.............

The lake is the lake, the lake is our community no matter what you 911 address reads. I am on the Talladega side but I only use that for a reference when telling someone where my place is. Other than that I am on the lake and happy to be there...........

boy I feel crabby this morning sorry we have nothing better to report but I will be nominating RBS for president and continued 100 degree meetings so the clothes come off..............no wait never mind,,,,,,,,,,,some of those St Clair Co Folks you dont want to see like that.............

Hey Guys, We did make it. My husband and I were the ones struggling with the kids last night. I looked for a guy with a goatee, and I saw one but his shirt said "Ray" not Other Steve. I didn't want to make a fool out of myself for once. I thought the meeting went well. I think we will volunteer for cleanup day. I am hoping to teach the kids to take pride in what they have and how lucky they are to be there. So next time you see me please speak.

Did you have blonde hair sitting on the wall?

I did see you, I was the goofball that came in right before 6 stood back by the drink tables until the meeting started and then sat by the door with an older gentleman. dont worry, we will run into each other again.

Despite my suggested sarcasm about last night meeting, I do believe the Renew our Rivers project is a good program. unfortunately the dates involved I will be traveling all but Thursday and Friday..........

Besides that I always carry a garbage bag in the boat to pick up trash that we see floating during our travels.

Everyone take care...................

Sounds like I missed a heckuva party.

Speaking as on that lives "on the other side" I know the look. But like Steve says, I like it here. I didn't ask you to climb my stairs and if you can't hack it, I'll be happy to run up there and fetch you a drink. I walk my stairs in an effort to get into speedo shape ;-)

I hope I get to make the next one. Or maybe we can all hook up for the ROR weekend. I missed last years but plan to make it this year.

Peace,

I'll repost my take on the meeting from the other thread to avoid confusion. And the fire department story is true.....
...........................

Well, let's see. It started out with a happy hour. Then music and dancing. Then it got REALLY wild. Then we all went home. Oh, wait. Wrong meeting.

It started out in a meeting room that was 10 degrees. We watched an APCO video about ROR cleanup. Then we watched a PowerPoint presentation going over it step by step. By that time the room temp was about 100 degrees and everybody started taking their clothes off.
That's about it.

The cleanup looks like LOADS of fun. I can't wait to spend the day picking other people's garbage out of the water. I wonder how many snakes can hide in a a refrigerator? The APCO video didn't address that issue.

One thing I noticed that was interesting. It's like the "Talladega side" of the lake is another planet. Whenever someone asked where our house was - the response was "Ohhhhhh - you're on the TALLADEGA side??" and they'd say it with a kind of perplexed look.
Ummmm...yeah. Is that a problem? Last time I looked it was on the same lake. So, we'r'e kind of out in the "country" and I will admit to being a bit clueless about our address. I know the street. We just don't have a mailbox. Presents a problem when you call the fire department. Ummm-I'll stand in the road and wait for you - just hurry! - then they arrive and say We caint git our truck DOWN THERE. Oh, OK - got any marshmallows?
But I digress...

I've seen Stemly VFD in action twice and they do great work. I hope I never have to see them work again but if I do, I think they are up to the task.

Stemley VFD is the OTHER side of the lake. Renfro VFD responded to my call. Great guys.

There's not a fire hydrant anywhere near us. My father had always told us that if the house caught fire it would burn. He also told us right before he died that the fireplace needed to be checked and not to use it until it was. My brother said he had it checked and it was OK to use. It was winter a couple of years ago. My son and the neighbor’s son started a fire in the fireplace and put in a piece of wood that had a huge knot in it and evidently a TON of sap. Well, when that thing caught, the fire got huge and the flames were going up into the chimney.

My daughter and my neighbor’s daughter left our house to walk next door but came running back into the house saying there were flames leaping out of the chimney outside. I went outside and when I saw it I freaked. I just knew the chimney must have had a crack and the flames were going into the attic of the house. Of course my fathers warning was the first thing I thought of. I knew I was getting ready to watch our house burn to the ground. I called 911 and that's when I realized I didn't know the address. The woman must have thought I was an idiot (well...yeah).
I told her I would go to the street and wait for them.

Not 5 minutes later a guy in a pickup showed up. He had been at his girlfriends house across the slough when he got the call. About 5 minutes after that the fire truck showed up with 4 more guys. Our drive is gravel and they said they couldn't get the truck down to the house or lake.
At that point I sat on the ground behind the fire truck thinking if the house was going to burn I couldn't bear to watch.

Sorry, long story - one of the firemen put on asbestos gloves and took the burning wood out of the fireplace and threw it outside. Then he set off a kind of bottle rocket thing into the fireplace that extinguished all the flames in the chimney. They checked the attic and all was OK. What had happened was that the residue in the chimney had started burning from the intense flames created by the mondo piece of wood and sap.

If our house had really been on fire - it would have burned to the ground. There's no way to get water to it. Thank goodness it didn't. If my father’s spirit resides anywhere it's at the lake house. That house may be just a structure - it's hard to put into words what it means to my whole family. From my childhood through my children's childhood - it's all about family and fun and togetherness. It has been such an important part of all of our lives.

I can't say enough about the Renfro VFD. They were great. The only thing they didn't have was marshmallows.

Wow!

Renfroe came to assist Stemly out here early last year. I agree, they are great. Stemly was working with everything they had and needed more water. About that time, here came Renfroe to fill the Stemly truck back up and then lend a hand. All were great guys.

By the way. The dispatcher for Stemly AND Renfroe VFD is the Talladega County Sherrifs Office. 256-362-6117.

Peace,

OK, let's stop the fire discussions. It's causing bad karma or something. Just as I hit send my daughter started a fire on the stove. I was able to put it out without making the call but..........

((( OLD MAN BY THE DOOR))))
Movin fr8t is she talking about me ? It was good to meet RBS for the first time. The one thing that stuck out (in the few minutes I was there), was the guy who asked if they were going to lower the water back down to the same level as a few months ago, for the clean-up campaign... Was he nuts or what ?
