Agreed that Sinclair's should be better. No excuse for not serving great food. It has been 50/50 on getting a great meal since it opened. What are the options for lake dining: please code 1 of by land and 2 if by sea(lake). I am on the west side of lake and to me the options have always been very limited.

Anyone wanting a superior "dining experience" could drive down 280 to Waverly and have a meal at Yellowhamer - comparable to any "fine dining" meal in Atlanta, NYC, Chicago, or just about any other place I can think of in this country. Also comparable in price, but you certainly get what you pay for. (and they know how to open, serve, and rest the wine)

Don't go to Suzi Q's unless you want to sweat and have greasy food. I am a betting man and I will be next season (summer) that place will not be Suzi Q's. She just won't survive. The Cove, which is way on the other side in blue creek is very good. You can go by water but 2 things...1) a long way unless you got a boat that can move pretty good, 2) once you get there you can't get under the bridge so you have to park and walk a little ways. Very good food. They have the occasional bad service but the food is usually good. Keep it safe and go to Chuck's and get a pizza...they don't ever screw them up.

How far of a drive is it? If I come down 63 to 280 do I take a left past wal-Mart and HD? Then how far?

it's almost to Auburn, on the left heading toward Auburn. If you go to their website, www.yellowhammerrestaurant.com, you can see the menu for the July 23 wine dinner. It's a fixed price menu and includes wine with each course. I attend the wine dinners at John's in Birmingham, but can't get to the lake mid-week for Yellowhammer. They usually offer a meat, poultry, fish and, sometimes, game entree, and the appetizers and desserts are amazing. Very extensive wine cellar as well. Quaint surroundings with nice ambiance (live piano music during dinner). Dress runs from casual (no cut-offs or bikini tops) to semi-dressy. Last time I was there must have been prom night, because there were several young couples in fancy dress - delightful. But I have also been there dressed in chinos and a sweater and felt very comfortable. If you are there on a game day, you will see lots and lots of blue/orange combinations! I hope you try it and like it.

Turn right. Go past Jackson Gap, Dadeville, Camp Hill etc. until you are almost to the Auburn turn-off. From 63, it will be about 25 miles or so to Waverly, and the restaurant itself is a few miles off of 280.

To those around Stillwaters, Blue Creek, etc. it's not such a bad drive. But if you live down 63 or in the Parker Creek or Real Island areas, you have to really want to go there bad, it is NOT a short drive from that part of the lake.

Sorry - I am near Blue Creek and know how to get to and from my place (which is, apparently, quite close to the registered sex offender I read about today on the Forum!). It's only about 20 minutes from the intersection of Walnut Hill and Hwy.50. I did a Google search the first time I went and had no trouble finding it. Took 50 to 280 and down to the turn to Waverly. The restaurant is in what was the first Ford dealership in the state (and, possibly, in the US - I think that's what they told us).

WOW! What a great menu and fair prices. There may be a back way to get there from 50 and 78 ... i will have to check a map. But a 25 mile drive is not that bad for a good dining experience.

You can come across Kowliga Bridge and turn left on 259 then stay straight onto 50 all the way across to 280. Very nice drive passing right below the dam.

How is the kids menu?

I don't know whether they have a kid's menu, although I have seen folks there with their children (my children are 29 and 32). If they don't have specific menu items for children, the staff has always been so accommodating, I'll bet they would handle any request. Don't know that they would have any hot dogs or chicken fingers on hand, though! You could call ahead and ask...

over the holiday my neice and nephew visited they are 14 and 12 and small for their age. the 14 year old girl is 5-3 and weighs 75# the boy is 5-0 and weighs 70.

they both orderd appetizers, entres and desert of the regular menu ate every bite and enjoyed all of it. as did their friend who was about 5-8 15 year old girl.

these kids are from Houston Tx and eat out regularly.

if your kids do not like adult food i would not take them to the Yellow Hammer. They probably would not fit in.

Translated - if your kids will be a whiney mess because they can't get chicken fingers, pizza and fries leave them with someone else so they can have a better time as well as you.

There really is nothing in the parent bible that says we have to take the precious darlings everywhere is there? If so, someone tore that page out of my copy!

Maybe YOU can't get your boat under the bridge; I'm on boat # 12 in my lake life, and every one of them but the sailboats could fit under the Highway 49 (Blue Creek) bridge . It's not the bridge that's the problem.

Oskars is great. Niffers quality has fallen. I do not eat at Niffers at all since June 2008. The steak was raw, and I love a rare steak, just not raw. The Chicken Parm Pasta, had no chicken. The chicken fingers were still cold and raw in middle. I spend the summers here and eat out at least 4 times a week. I like Popular Dog, Judys Stage Coach, Oskars, Lake Martin Grille, Home Plate Cafe, The Cove, just to name a few.

We ate at Niffers this past Thursday and had a great time. Food was good and the atmosphere was great. Catfish was good, burger good and chicken fingers were also good, and were not at all like you described them.

will definately go back.

Lake Martin Grille appears to be closed for good. I also enjoyed the place.

I also agree with the Dawg, they have great pork chops and steaks. Nothing fancy.
but good food and sandwhiches. They have the best chicken salad ever.

NIFFERS is good for happy hour type place. Burgers are not bad, but food at Oskars overall is much better. I can't say much for NIFFER's food, but I guess some must like it.

as long as well behaved, I'm sure it's fine, but personally would not want to pay the prices for kids because they would likely not fully appeciate the food. It's great place though.

Roger that! My cabin is only about 5 miles from Oskar's and we visit her at least twice (on the way in and on the way out) whenever we are down there. We really, really, REALLY miss MooWalla! I believe that was Oskar's sister or brother in law, and we did as much trade there as we did at Oskar's! Was very surprised when Oskar told me her kids had never had a single french fry...she's a very food-conscious mother!

Agree here too. The wings are good on Monday night and the burgers are as well. The Rueben is OK also but I stay away from any of the 'dinners' at Niffers. If I desire anything other than a sandwich I go to Oskars.
