Just curious. Did anyone sign up for Charter's cable internet for 14.95 a month? I did and just wow. How do companies like this stay in business? Understand, I live 165 miles from Lake Martin so, I pretty much waste a whole day and a lot of gas money coming over for my confirmed appointment. First appt., they never showed up at all and never returned my calls. I came back a week later for my second attempt. They will be at my lake house between 8:00 and 12:00. Noshows again.
I started traveling up their food chain. 7 phone calls, 2 supervisors and 2 managers later they finally track down the "technicians," back to that in a moment, and assure me they will be there by 3:00. 3 more phone calls and 2 hours later at 5:10, the 2 "technicians" show up with a cable box for my TV. I calmly explain to these 2 fellows, who could not have been over 16 years old, I already have Charter Cable TV and I had ordered cable internet. To my utter surprise, yes sarcasm intended, they didn't have the proper equipment for that but, they would wait for a technician to bring it. For the next hour and a half, they sat in their truck and watched me, a 50+ dude, cut my grass. Finally, about 7:00, the other tech came with the modem and left. Well, well...... no cable wire. By this time I had had it and sent them home with their promise, they would go by the warehouse, pick up the essentials and return no later than 8:00 in the morning as I had to leave for an appt. at 8:45.
No shows once again. At this point, I lost all resolve and gave up. Oh well, at least the manager promised me free installation and the first month free. So, in immortal words of Bill Murray in Caddieshack, "At least I got that going for me."

Wow is right. I have cable at my home in Atlanta, but went with DSL at the lake. You do not need to be home and they will mail you your modem over night. No you do not have to have a phone either. They will install DSL without a phone number. I use cell only at the lake (but just added the majic jack) for when i am there.

Look back a few pages and you will see how horrible they are and what your other options are.

Water- who provides your DSL service at the lake?
Blue Creek- I was talking about those freebies tongue-in-cheek. I still might let them install it and let them try to collect from me.

AT&T (Bell South). I am only there on weekends and got DSL Lite for $19.95 a month. They have faster speeds, but the lite is not bad. You can get up to 3 mpbs and i think that is $42 a month.

Charter has a self install kit for a cable modem. If you have enough computer intelligence to use this website then you can hook the cable modem up yourself. This is what I did in Bham. Check to see if they offer the kit for Lake Martin. I don't know why you are so surprised. It's the same with any service industry these days. They all stink. Like my father always said, if you want something done right, do it yourself

I did the self install about a month ago at my place on the lake. You need to go by and pick up the kit (modem, cables, splitter, etc.) from the Charter office in Alexander City.
The connection was simple to an existing inside cable connection. After you hook it up, you call a Charter support number and they activate the modem and set up your email account. I had to call them twice (once for the initial setup and second time to upgrade the speed to 10mb, but I never waited on hold more than a couple of minutes.Worked great for me, but based on other posts on this board about Charter, I may have just been lucky.
One note...If you are going to use a wireless router, don't connect it until after you have a successful suteup.

Also keep in mind that with a wireless router (which is a must with a laptop) your speed is only as fast as the router. So paying for the super speed (which you really do not need unless you are downloading huge files, normal surfing will only be as fast as your wireless router with your laptop. In most cases 1.5 mpbs to 3.0 is plenty fast. 6.0 mpbs is as fast as a T-1 line. For a home user this is normally not necessary, but if it is not much more in cost and you can afford it is fun to have.
