Does anyone have a way to get rid of weeds in the water? Last year we had a really bad problem with weeds in the water at our lake house. It was so bad that we could not swim. It is a weed that stands straight up in the water, and it has runners all along the ground. Makes a woven mess. Now that the water is low, I would like to kill them so that we won't have the same problem again this year. They are already turning a red color on the ground, even thought they don't have any leaves yet. Please help anyone. I have got to be able keep those kids in the water this summer!

About 5 years ago we had a problem with them at our house on Lake Jordan. We notified the power company and they got rid of them using some sort of spray. I know you cannot use roundup in the lake.

I do not know if it works or not, but Overton's online has an Aquatic Weed Eradicator Rake. I've seen it in my magazine at home and always wondered if it works. Kind of expensive.

Try spraying the weeds with a hot salt water solution from your garden tank sprayer. On a dry day.

I'm sure it kills the water weeds, but I'd be scared to use it. If you (or your neighbors) irrigate out of the lake, it is likely to kill or harm the landscaping. I also wouldn't like the idea of swimming in an area where systemic chemicals are released.

When we were in the drought and the weeds were growing on the exposed shore I pulled them by hand and set them ablaze. Then I weed ate the shore. I guess if you have year round water you would need a different approach.
