I am looking at doing several new projects around the house and at a RV Park I own and thinking of using some RailRoad Ties. I will start needing only 10. Next project will take 65.

Where is the best place to buy?

What is the price per RailRoad Tie?

I know Lake Martin Ace has them. I don't know the price or if it's a good deal.

Ace (Lake Martin Building Supply) wants $10.49 each for #1 Road Road Ties. Seems a bit high to me. I could use #2 if I can find them.

We have used railroad ties on many projects, however, as the ties age they attract wood roaches. We just paid thousands to have railroad tie walls removed. Within two weeks the roaches were gone. I wonder if you want to deal with that problem if you are renting property. Also, the chemicals in the ties will leach into the lake if they are too near the lake. We just did a small project and had to get ADEM approval. They won't approve ties near the lake. On the other hand you might be able to do a project without ADEM approval and you could probably get several years of use out of the ties before you had to deal with a bug problem. Our walls were almost twenty years old.

You will also have to deal with the smell the first few years. In the summer the oils and creosote will heat up and give off a smell. Also if people walk on them they can get tar on their shoes and track it in the house. Just more things to consider. Years down the road they will also attract termites.

Why don't you use Allenblock or equivalent? Better looking, lasts longer and it is cleaner
