Very interested in posts about fishing for striper from docks. Would like to try the method mentioned but wondering where to buy gizzard shad or other large live bait? Also, will they stay alive in a submerged bucket? Thanks

I know a fellow that catches them regularly from the bank using hand-sized bream.

Cannot buy Shad, have to catch them. Most guides go up to the dam below Logan Martin to catch shad. They will not stay alive in a submerged bucket from what I was told.

Best bet is to buy Black Salties, as very hard to kill and will live for weeks in a large submerged bait bucket. You can buy them at Fish Tails Bait Shop just outside of Alex City past the Home Depot heading towards Bham. Would call ahead to ensure they have them.

Fish Tails phone number is 256 212 9850

Shad are notorious for dying in a bucket. They are very difficult to maintain unless you have some pretty expensive tanks and chemicals for that purpose.
Black salties are not as desirable to stripes, but they do work and they are tough, tough, tough.
If you go to Fish Tales, call to see if they are open. I went there last week to get salties. They were locked up tight at 7:15 a.m. Had to go to plan "B" after that.

If you are interested in getting set up to keep shad alive at the lake, I can help you with the equipment. It will cost you around 350$ to get set up. call me at 2052812882 (kyle with any questions) If you are considering keeping shad alive I would make sure you are set up before the shad quit running behind the dams (about June 1) The shad caught behind the dams are fairly easy to keep alive, and will stay alive for months with the right equipment but if you have to catch shad in a lake after the water temp gets above 70 you will lose 30-50% no matter what you do.

The other option is to buy salties directly from the source. Go to blacksalties.com to get the details. I buy them for backup bait, and they ship the from AR to you via Federal Express overnight. They will live in a cage on the dock for months.

Tight Lines!
