I watched 60 Minutes tonight and saw two segments that really bothered me. The first story was about the high unemployment rate in Wilmington, Ohio, which was the Hub for DGH, a competitor of FedEx and UPS that discontinued its operations. Wilmington’s situation was horrible. What really bothered me was the federal dollars sent to Wilmington but no program to create jobs. The high unemployment rate reduced revenue for the city, schools, and good people were hurting. No one was asking for handouts.

The question that came to me was this. This country has offered 100 billion dollars to underdeveloped countries for global warming. What if the government had offered 10,000 people, $30,000 each? How many years would 100 billion dollars last? My calculations said that this condition could continue for 3,300 years.

Another way of asking this. How many people could be paid $30,000 for one year from this 100 billion dollars? Again, the number is astronomical. My calculator say that 100 billion dollars would pay 3.3 million Americans $30,000 each for one year. What is the total number unemployed in this country? And yet we have spent close to 1 trillion dollars in bailouts. This government has no idea as to mange the unemployed or to help create jobs so that they can get back on their feet.

The second subject was the status of the Greek Orthodox Church in Turkey. This Christian group has been in Istanbul (previously Constantinople) for hundreds of years and its members were in the millions. Currently, what is left is being trampled by the Turkish government which is now 99% Moslem. For the first time I saw first hand what happens when Moslems become the majority. They will not tolerate Christianity.

We Americans need to wake up and demand that our government get priorities correct. Unemployment at 17%, which is closer to the real number, cannot continue and is a he&^ of a lot more important that global warming, cap and trade, and universal health care.

I watched 60 Minutes tonight too.

I agree with you that the story about Wilmington was quite touching. Especially since so many of them were participating in retraining opportunities, with probably no hope of getting a job that would pay half of what they had been making at DHL. But, it made me wonder this -- what were their state and local officials doing to attract more business into the area by offering tax breaks and other incentives? Their mayor seems liked a real nice man, but to say that the city is living on hope for the future? Does he think that hope falls out of the sky?

While I agree with you that I would rather see the govenrment give $30K a year to families who need it rather than spend it on climate change or continuing to keep Israel and Egypt from fighting; but that is not a long term solution. States need to do what they can to attract businesses. I think Alabama is a prime example of what can be done.

With regard to the Greek Orthodox church in Istanbul, it appears that it's not so much what happens to a Christian church in a Muslim country, but what happens when there is a dwindling Christian population. It's not just that the Turkish government doesn't support them, it's that the Turkish government is supporting the beliefs of the majority of the people.
What was interesting was the document that had been signed by handprint of Mohammed that said that there should be peace among religions. Just goes to show that it is not the religion of Islam that is really the problem, but rather the way Islam is being interpretated and manipulated by the clerics. In a lot of ways, it's what has been done to Christianity as well, down through the ages.

Enlightenment .... that is great Hound .... you see that tax breaks and incentives grow business and create jobs. Now if we can just get Obama and his Chicago bullies to see the light we may be able to get this country moving again.

I lived in Ohio for 6 years and my wife grew up in Cincy. The problem with Ohio is high taxes and state government regulation stifles business. They look to get out of the state and not into the state. What they could do that would have an immediate positive impact on business is to lower taxes. Other than a change to a business friendly environment (and not by doling out the people's money to favored businesses because that rarely works out well) there is no compelling reason to want to have your business in Ohio.

As for the other problem, I work closely with a Catholic lay organization that is all over the world and there is a strong pattern of discrimination, harassment, intimidation and outright hostility in Muslim countries toward Christians. You have to ask the question, why would Christians leave the country of their birth? The answer is simple, Islam is not a religion of peace and tolerance.

I wish people had taken that same attitude about the local officials during Katrina, instead of blaming it all on scapegoat Bush. Bush did enough wrong without having to be blamed for other folks mistakes.

Well, I think with Katrina there was enough blame to go around. While the federal government blew it, the state and local governments blew it too. In fact, the fact that recovery has taken so long and is incomplete probably has more to do with the state and local government than the feds.

One of the reasons I think Bush got so much blame for Katrina was how long it took him to go down there; and when he got there, it didn't appear that he was horrified. Then was the "Hell of a job Brownie"... But, in fairness, Bush was not aware that "Brownie" was about to leave, and that FEMA had never successfully integrated into DHS. I think Bush suffered from bad optics. Clinton was much better at demonstrating that "he felt their pain".

You know, I think part of the problem is Islam is that they don't seem to think they can peacefully co-exist with other religions. I don't know if that was the original intent of Mohammed - I doubt it, but that's certainly the way the religious leaders interpret it. Yet, it is the fastest growing religion in the world.

Hound, there are a number of really good books on Islam. I would recommend The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam. It speaks to the real problems with Islam. As for the growth, partly due to birth rates and partly due to the hostile environment toward other religions where Islam dominates. A detailed study of Mohammad will cause you to question where the inspiration for Islam originates.
