I am totally bewildered that these headlines are for 1 day only!

1. Field trip for black students sparks controversy at Ann Arbor elementary school

2. Students Kicked Off Campus for Wearing American Flag Tees

3. Freddie Mac asks for fresh 10.6 billion dollar bailout

4. The Tea Party protests are really about white rage and they are sowing the seeds for domestic terrorism. This was the message delivered by Rep. Carson that afternoon and that is the message the media has run with.

5. Navy SEAL Found Not Guilty on Assault Charges

6. Former US ambassador to the UN John Bolton on Tuesday expressed concern over what he says is pressure being exerted by President Barack Obama on Israel to rid the country of nuclear weapons.

7. The U.S. economy will ultimately suffer the same fate as Greece, which is struggling to avoid default on its government debt while rioters run wild in the streets, says Newsmax contributor Dick Morris.

290,000 jobs gained in April. Even discounting the census temp jobs that is 10% as many jobs as Pres. W can claim in 96 months! The total for Feb. Mar. and Apr. over 550,000. About the same as Pres W lost in three weeks in the final months of his administration.....I look forward to WW and MM's bu', bu', bu' excuses and whines.

Yey yeh, I know the rate of unemployment went up. Even that can be considered a positive because over 800,000 who had given up went back into the job market. That is a sure sign of confidence returning to the population which is the thing most needed to kick the recovery into a higher gear.

We don't whine, we respond to your posts with facts and logic and lately you have just been drive by posting and then slinking off into the grass waiting for another blind squirrel to find an acorn so you can pop your head up and post again. Gratefully given all the bad news that isn't very often.

I am truly glad for the improved job numbers but am surprised that the census bureau has only hired 66,000 workers in April since from their own website they plan to hire 800,000 workers in April and May. If they are going to meet that goal they will need to hire 736,000 employees this month which I can't imagine will be feasible. I noticed that they did not tell us how many of the new jobs were in government. By my math it is around 100,000 of the 290,000 new jobs. So more than 1/3rd of the job creation in April was in government, and most of that temporary jobs. Look for another big bump in May if the census bureau meets their hiring goals.

So the useful job growth in April is closer to 190,000 because every job created in government has to be created using money taken from the private sector to pay for it (i.e., it doesn't add to the GDP because what is given must first be taken away). Despite that, I will take 190,000 new private sector jobs over where we have been over the last few years although too many people are only employed on a temporary basis.

Another trend that we need to reverse is the number of people that are only marginally attached to the labor force and are not included in the unemployment numbers is at 2.4 million versus 2.1 million this time last year and a total of 15.3 million people are still out of work. What that means is 300,000 more people in April have given up on the job market versus the same time last year. Add these 2.4 million folks in and unemployment is well over 10%. If you add the underemployed the number in April is actually the second worse since the Depression and getting worse, not better. By the way, a recent study indicated that the census bureau hiring is expected to temporarily reduce the unemployment level from 0.4% to 0.5% when they are fully staffed. Again, these are only temporary jobs that will go away eventually. Also, the number of people out of work for more than 6 months is at an all-time record high.

You see Archie, unlike Dems we don't view good news for America as bad news. But what has changed is all the negative news associated with this labor report is no longer the lead story like it was under Bush. The government media dutifully reports the nugget of good news in all the bad news once again explaining why they are going the way of the dinosaur.

Architect, you will always have a place in the New World Order with logic that can rationalize increased unemployment as a positive. You have successfully accepted a world without absolutes, and word has it, think the emperor's new clothes look just grand........

According to the respected WSJ, the report Friday showed that the private sector created 231,000 jobs. The reason that the unemployment number increased is that more have decided to reenter the job market who had previously given up. While "comrade" will be unable to understand this, the fact that more are optimistic and have reentered ther market is a positive sign. Only a bias wing nut will find that be a negative. And, they seem to thrive on this forum.

GF

You do not have to have a PhD in Mathematics to understand that when the unemployment rate increases from 9.8% to 9.9%, the number of unemployed Americans has increased. Forget about those who were unemployed but suddenly realized that they were unemployed. If the Denominator is fixed and the percentage increases, then the Numerator is larger.

Now, you can forget what you want but I would suggest when you invest in the market you follow the numbers and what is behind them. The logic that is used to develope various reported statistics can give you insight into trends.

You can call it fuzzy math, Obama math or Palin trying to make the Messiah look bad.

The unemployment rate is calculated by dividing the total number of unemployed people(numerator) by the number of people in the labor force(denominator). When people re-enter the market to begin a job hunt again, they boost the number of the unemployed until they find a new position, boosting the overall unemployment rate.

So, the rise in the unemployment rate was due to more people feeling that the economy is good enough to restart their job searches. That’s a good sign, even though it means more active competition for job-seekers.

Your argument should be that these same people helped to reduce the unemployment number when they stopped looking for a job. That, I would agree.

GF, I'm more of a concept person, which is where you seem to have your challenges. MM and lotowner have addressed the particulars of your contention, so think about it. I'm sure you understand that once the desired result is identified, the data can be manipulated to fit. Or as George Costanza put it: It's not a lie, if you truly believe it."

GF, the math doesn't add up. If there were 290,000 jobs created and 66,000 were from the census bureau that equals 224,000. It is not conceivable that no other government jobs were crated across the entire U.S. in both state, federal and local governments. Sorry if the WSJ said that because they are wrong. I went to the BLS website and added up all the private sector jobs listed and it came to 190,000. That means that 66,000 were added by the census bureau and the remainder (34,000) were added by other government agencies. There is nothing fuzzy unless I missed one of the private sector categories.

Did you have any thoughts on the other more disturbing aspects of the jobs report or are the left wing nut blinders on? If they are watch out for Archie, his cover his eyes.

I will not hang my hat on the numbers published by that biased right wing WSJ.

Here are the government numbers from the BLS showing seasonal adjusted from March to April from Table B-1:

Government 59,000

Federal 65,000
Federal, except U.S. Postal Service 69,100
U.S. Postal Service -4,000

State government -5,000
State government education - 700
State government, excluding education -4,400

Local government -1,000
Local government education -1,400
Local government, excluding education 500

Excluding the 66,000 for the census and the number for federal is flat.

For some reason there are still 34,000 jobs missing. When I added up the private sector jobs from each category it only came to 190,000. While I may have missed a category I don't think so. Maybe they didn't list all the categories in the summary.

Will be interesting to see what happens when the numbers are adjusted. I am surprised about the negative growth in gov't workers (excluding census) but I suppose its possible they have burned through the porkulus money. That's the problem with government, they create nothing. If they had returned this money to the the private sector instead of using it to pay back the SEIU and propping up fiscally irresponsible state and local government maybe the jobs would last.

In any event, regardless of whether it is 231,000 or 190,000 it is good news despite all the associated worse news not being reported. As I said earlier, it is just another example of why the government media is going extinct.
