Subject:   Is the GOP being set up?
Date:   7/12/2010 3:37:04 PM

Interesting thesis starting to hit the airwaves and blogs.  It seems that many in the political class have come to the conclusion that we are headed toward a double dip recession....duh!  Will begin manifesting itself just after the November mid-term elections.

Idea is as follows:  1) GOP takes control of House and the numbers in the Senate end up roughly 50/50 (plus or minus a seat or two).  2) The lame duck Congress from November to January 1 goes on a legislation spree (cap & tax, immigration reform, etc., etc.) and Obama signs whatever crosses his desk.  Concept is the short timers from conservative districts have zero to lose voting for a bunch of leftist legislation.  3) Come January or thereabouts the economy is in full throated retreat.  4) Dems blame the GOP who now controls the House. 5) Obama uses the next two years to claim that the GOP is to blame for the new downturn, the government media dutifully reports it as such, the ignorant masses (especially those much vaunted independents) buy it and Obama is reelected.

Not a bad strategy all the way around.  Unlikely you say?  Despite the fact that Dems have controlled Congress for going on 4 years and will have controlled the WH for two years they are still blaming the GOP and the media is slavishly going along with the ruse.  Why would it be any less likely after the mid-terms?  And with the tax increases coming in January 2011 we should expect corporate earnings to be pretty good in 2010 as they bring forward profits to be taxed at a lower rate and push costs into 2011 to minimize tax liability.

That is why the GOP has to take a stand between now and November as to what they plan to accomplish, how it will work, how long it will take, etc.  If they do nothing and are put back in the majority they will deserve what they get and we, the American people will be royally screwed.

It has become interesting politics to the point that there is less a move to TAKE CREDIT for something that goes right, whey you probably had little for it getting there, and more a move to SET UP BLAME for the bad conditions.  Sort of tells you the state of the union, though, I guess.

I am sick and tired of the blame game. I lean pretty far right, vote Repub almost always, and yet I have stated my opposition to much that Bush and cronnies did.  But just because they did wrong does not give liberty to continue the wrong.  Politicians need to be a hero for a change, and find creative ways to get us on the right direction.

I too feel like we are headed toward worst times.  The light at the end of the tunnel is dim.

I agree that we are in another downward turn. Recovery? Not until 2012, and then only if politicans stop pointing fingers at each other and actually DO something. I've gotten bored with all the news programs, because all they do is blame one another. Pointless. It is what it is. I think the GOP is not coming out with a strategy, because I don't think they have one. I don't think the Dems have one either, having already done what they thought would work -- it hasn't. If anyone came up with some common sense plan, which will have to involve some serious budget cuts, I think they would be electable. P.S., Speaking of Budgets, I have been watching with interest this debate over whether the Joint Strike Fighter needs a secondary engine. I was on the perifery when the decision was made about one engine. AF (supported by the SECDEF) has continued that position, but Congress will not let it go. Here it is almost 4 years later and then are still providing funding to GE for the development of the 2nd engine that no one wants or thinks they need.

Hound, have you looked at Paul Ryan's roadmap for America?  There is link to it in one of my posts above.  It is very interesting and in my view makes a lot of sense.  So I really think its unfair to say the GOP has not offered solutions.  It is more accurate to say that the government media is embargoing their ideas.

You know, MM, I don't think you can blame the media. If one puts it out there and there is ground root support, it will get press. Look at the Tea Party. Look at Rand Paul.

I don't blame the government media for the informed but for the ignorant masses they have an impact.  Just look at what they gave us with Obama.
