Just received a Shorelines special edition from Alabama Power Co with the headlines "Drought Watch".  The Alabama state climatologist, John Christy, is predicting that we are heading into dry weather for the next two years.  APC has gotten permission to keep winter water levels higher at 3 other lakes and is awaiting a FERC ruling to raise the winter level at Martin by three feet.  Here's hoping the ruling comes in soon!

Alabama Power filed their request with FERC on Nov 30, with a projected effective date of Jan 1, 2011. Unfortunately, a FERC employee told us that they didn't find the request until Dec 28, sent out a 14 day request for comment on Dec 30, so the requested three foot drought increase won't even begin until Jan 15 or so. FERC broadcast APCo's request on Nov 30, but it just fell into that black hole that is our federal government for four weeks. APCo should have followed up on the request, but didn't--yes, we talked to them also--so we wait.

Very annoying that they didn't follow up!  Thanks for the update.

I love our government....can't understand why so many people don't want them more involved in our daily lives.

Well, there you go...This was predicted in LAST year's chicken feathers.  "3 at last, 3 at last, thank goodness we are 483 at last"   The chickens had wondered what happened, and now we know-----the guvmint was involved.

One "problem" with FERC is that they have no time requirements to respond to requests ala Corps of Engineers do.  So one never really knows what/when to expect them to do something.

So are we saying that three requests did not get lost, and only one got overlooked?

If anyone wants to read the document requesting the variance, it can be found at the link below. It is three feet higher than low pool that ApCo requested -- 483 Feet Martin Datum (484 MSL)
