Saw a snake yesterday in the water, just out from my floating dock.  I think that it was a southern water snake, what do y'all think?

It was banded and brightly colored orange/pink.  It caught a small fish underwater and swam over to the shore to eat it.  All the while we were watching it, talking, and it was not frightened of us.  After consuming the fish, it swam back out, underwater, and surfaced again near our floating dock.  it then raised up out of the water about 1/4 of the way, and swam directly towards us, then went under the floating dock;  It was about 3 feet long.

I say southern water snake, since it swam under water and was fairly aggressive  towards us.

Likely a Midland water snake and harmless.  There are plenty of sites that show pics.

Rule of thumb... In the continental U.S.A. if a snake is swimming on top of the water be very aware that it is probably a viper. If swimming under the surface in fresh water more than likely harmless. Take it from a, FROG When I was just a poly-wog. My Dad use to say... "There are 2 kinds of snakes... Rattlesnakes and Chickensnakes. If it don't have a chicken in it's mouth, it's a Rattlesnake."

There are three types of bad snakes:
Live snakes
Dead snakes
Sticks that look like snakes

I had been doing some cleaning when I saw a snake about a month ago - put the 0 nozzle in the pressure washer, and tried to give Mr Noshoulders a bath from about twelve feet (he had gone under the edge of the ramp). The boss did not like my method - maybe I should have used the soap nozzle first...

Almost assuredly a Midland Water Snake. And I have been told by those who would know that an adult water snake is very territorial, and will usually win a fight with a cottonmouth, so if you have Water Snakes around, you most likely won't have cottonmouths, too.

The old "Garden of Eden" argument, which conveniently ignores the fact that it wasn't a snake, it was Satan using a snake. Satan has used people, too; should we kill ALL people because of the actions of ONE?

After no sightings for about 3 years, i had a black racer on my cook porch Saturday.  He zipped under the cook porch while I watched.  Except for the surprise factor, I like having those kind around.  It was a young one - about 3 1/2 feet long.  Then I decided to go for a kayak ride Sunday morning and two small banded water snakes were hiding under it and swam away when  I moved it. t least the beaver has left my trees alone this year!!!

LOL....don't blame that one on me (I was jlazc, not jalcz). I have no idea who our dyslexic friend is, but he seemed to like my old alias; It's one of the  reasons I changed last year after a discussion with Bruce.

Snake identification is easy. Just look him in the eye. If a viper, he will have cat eyes. If other, he will have round pupils.
