Last weekend there was an incident with a dog attacking a goat on Goat Island.  It was discussed on LM FB pages  Please help spread the word that there are no dogs permitted on Goat Island.  A suggestion has been made to put up more signs, but who knows if signs will make any difference.  If the attacks continue, the owners may have to remove the goats permanently, and no one wants that.

There is a law enforcement official response to this. Basically they have said that there is no law which prohibits dogs from being on the island. They have called for decency in the matter. I will see if I can find that response. But I guess just like some people put up a no dogs someone else could put up an old goats permitted sign. Neither would be enforceable

Yes, it is not enforcable.  It is really a matter of common sense and public courtesy.  It was heartbreaking to see pictures of the goat that was recently attacked.  Apparently when the goats get panicked, they run into the water and can drown.  Luckily this time, two good people were able to rescue them.

They can probably put up a million signs on the island warning about dogs, but some people are so self involved, it won't make a difference.

It boils down to common sense and common courtesy.  Both of which seem to be left at the dock when folks get on a boat, if they even had any to begin with.  We were there last weekend with a boat load of family, including our two dogs.  My great neice wanted to go pet the goats so we told her she would have to jump in and swim to the island, which she did without hesitation.

It would seem to me that since Alabama Power owns the island, they could make a rule about the dogs.  But Lifer has it right - if people would just use common sense and be courteous, this wouldn't even be an issue.  It is about the same if people left their dogs chase cattle in a field.  Of course that would be private property.

And it is not just big dogs vs. small dogs because someone observed that it was a long haired daushund that attacked the goat a week or so ago.
