Where are all the Alabama Power haters now???? Maybe Fay will help everyone realize the dymanics of the lake level. It boils down to two simple equations.

No rain = low lake level
rain = high lake level

Simple math really. There are no APCO conspiracy theories. So me some love

You are kidding right? If they released water they would be flooding downstream and making the flooding potential worse. That is the only reason they are holding the water. Big shock that a trpoical system is filling the lake.

Unless I read incorrectly, they DID release this morning.

Torrential rains expected over the next 12-18 hours in the northwest Ga watershed. Flash flood warnings already issued. They've got to find a place to store all of this water this week. Lanier's watershed has also gotten 4-5 inches of rain. I would not doubt a close to a full pool scenario for the Labor Day weekend if all the predictions hold. What a storm! It would be interesting if someone could just roughly estimate how many gallons of water this system has brought to just the US alone.

Here is what Alabama Power Website is saying. What does this mean?
Tentative Schedule for Turbine Operation Date Start Hour Number of Units
8/25/2008 12:00 AM 0
8/25/2008 6:00 AM 2
8/25/2008 7:00 AM 0

It means they are holding water back.

2 turbines running for one hour today and 1 turbine for 4 hours Wed. That is a very minimal release.

Turbines release at approx. 4,100 cu. ft./sec. per each. One turbine is larger than the other 3 but the average is about 4,100 cu. ft./sec.

I think the last thing areas south of the dam need is more water (at this time).

If on 8/21/2008 LM had been at 489.0 and TS Fay provided the same amount of rain, would LM have gone to 491.(whatever) or would AP have released water downstream?

In that case, it would have been out of APC's hands; the water doesn't get much higher than 490 before it starts spilling over the top of the dam.

What they probably would have done had the lake been at 489 is done a lot of releasing in the days before the storm got here, just in case.

(And then they would have prayed that the storm DID hit and dump a lot of water on the area; otherwise they would have lowered the lake for no reason, which would have upset of bunch of people on lakemartin.com, and of course they exist only to please those people. ;-) )

They are not releasing for a lousy 2 hours because they want to generate cheap power for a couple hours ... right now they are releasing to control the "real" potential for flooding based on what is coming our way. They dont want to release do to additional downstream flooding. All of you that think that martin dam is some huge power generation source for Southern Company is TOTALLY wrong. It supplies a very small percent of power needs for Alabama. ALL the hyro generators combined supply less than 5%. When they do generate through releases in the summer it is for one of two reasons ONLY:

1. satisfy required releases
2. help meet peak demands of summer

They normally do two as part of satisfying #1.
