Subject:   Bumpers on Boat or Dock?
Date:   5/13/2009 8:14:44 PM

My last post got me publically stoned by a couple of you, so I'm a bit gunshy about asking another question. I'll try one more and if I get nailed again, I'll become a full time lurker rather than poster. The question:

When visiting relatives at their lake house in Tennessee, all I ever see is bumpers attached to the boats. Those boats are frequent visitors to friends docks, marinas and restaurants and I only see bumpers attached to the boat - they just flip them out to protect the boat from the dock. However, the house I bought at LM has bumpers attached to the dock only and none to the boat.

What's correct (or best): bumpers on the boat, dock or both. I'll sit back and wait for your answers and opinions while ducking in advance. Thanks.

Warning: Your question(s) are fine, and in order, and you should get a good response. But, certain words (by virture of the great Sigmond Freud) have found new meaning in the LakeMartinapedia. Keep posting, keep listening. You will get great info, you will understand which words are "hot", and you will be entertained. I know I am.

P.S. Yes, duck.

OK, I will go easy on you, when you have a chance do a search for the word Bumpers and I think you will find there is sometimes a different meaning for them.

To answer your question, it is all personal preference and my personal preference it to protect my boats at all cost, therefore I have bumpers on the side of my boat and also on my docks. The way I look at it the more my boats are protected the better. Plus the bumpers on my dock also protect mu dock from visitors boats from beating my docks to death if they do not bring any bumpers with them.

Plus the bumpers in my boats also serve to protect my boat when I tie up at friends homes, marinas, the Rock, etc.

Also there was somebody a while back, forgot who, that stated it was not proper etiquette to allow your bumpers to hang out of the boat while going down the lake and that is what stirred up all the lakematinpedia surrounding the word bumpers (aka boobs - LOL).

Hope this helps.

Personally I think you should only carry bumpers to be used at a remote location and they should always be carried IN the boat NEVER hanging over the gunwale.

As far as your own dock, I think you should mount permanent dock bumpers around it such as the "p" shape or flat shape on vertical 4x4's located around the edge of your dock so as to contact the rubrail of your boat. That provides the best protection and simplicity.

But, that's only my opinion!

Dude.. Do whatever works, but you need a few on your boat.. go to chucks for pizza, hang them over the side and tie on the mooring lines.. don't be overwhelmed.. just do it pal.. welcome to the lake..

Keep posting and don't let a select few bother you. (did you get my message on fb?) The above advice is good, and I admit I had a good laugh when I read your post....as lakngulf said, "bumpers" have been a hot item here. We've heard all about big bumpers, floppy bumpers, covered and uncovered bumpers, and the improper use of bumpers; very little of which is relevant to your question (LOL).

Actually the tubular one you hang on your boat are called "fenders"
The dock ones are bumpers. That said I think you need both.

You should keep posting as all the comments are part of the hazing process. As for your question, I would have both. You need them on the dock in case you have visitor without fenders or as is my case, the teenage first mates don't set them properly on the boat when docking (actually it could be my wife mis-setting the fenders but she might see my post and I don't need the adverse publicity) :-). You need them on board if you want to tie up to another boat on the lake or end up somewhere without bumpers on a dock.

Bumpers and docks in the same post. You have found a home!

If you have a big dock, should you have a bumper on each side of it?

No doubt about it.

I would suggest dock bumpers on both sides as well as on the end posts. You can never have enough. Don't save a few dollars and then as that Fram commercial said---"pay me now or pay me later". Why ding your nice boat or pontoon and then go out and buy the bumpers? If one can't afford them then they can't afford to own a boat.

As to boat fenders, I carry 4-- 2 for each side.

Although I agree that more bumpers is better, I have only one end post on my dock that is capable of accepting bumpers. I am sure that, due to the extra expenses involved with having more, that my wife is satisfied with this arrangement though.

Oil your bumpers down during the day. They will remain much more attractive if you do this.

Just be careful not to spill any on your dock.

This is espeicially good advice if your dock is between the bumpers.

This has been a bit confusing to follow and absorb so here is my two cents recap:
(1) Use as many bumpers are you are comfortable with.
(2) Bumpers are sometimes confused as fenders
(3) Bumpers are good in a boat when you "tie up at friends"
(4) Be careful with slippery bumpers
(5) Wives should be consulted in all matters related to bumpers--how many, placement and use
(6) Size matters
(7) Misuse of bumpers leads to "pay me now or pay me later"
(8) Protection is the key, protection at all costs, especially protection from visitors "beating my docks" (Hey, I don't make this up, just recapping what was said)

Wrong, Cat, I am on the dock side, not the bumper side.

Anyone reading the responses first, then reading my question would think I'm a plant to stir up the humor on the board. I can assure all that I was asking a legitimate question even though I used the wrong term (bumper vs. fender).

I thank all of you for the advice and the humor. As I see it, the bumpers are already firmly in place on my dock, I just need to add fenders to my boat.

NO single man would ever want fenders instead of bumpers in his boat, or on his dock..lol.
