I actually believe the purpose of the leak was three fold. First, to put pressure on one of the majority to change their position much as Roberts did at the last minute to preserve Obamacare. Second, to mobilize the Democratic base for the midterms. Third, to reinvigorate the concept of court packing. If Roberts wants to preserve the reputation of the Court they should issue the ruling ASAP. Otherwise, if the ruling changes later everyone will believe it was because of political pressure. And of course Roberts ruled with the minority on this one. As a Catholic (who was the speaker at my son's high school graduation before moving to SCOTUS) he is going to have to answer for his votes with the ultimate judge. I do not envy him in that regard.
