Not a boat mechanic. Had the same problem. Had the starter rebuilt and the builder said it was in good shape BEFORE he rebuilt. Thanks from some knowledgable people on the forum, I found out boats have TWO solenoids (sp?). I had replaced the obvious one near the starter. Went to blue creek marina and bought an exact replacement for the other solenoid, BINGO....no more problems. I would change both of these before doing anything to the starter.
